Multi-Frequency Alpha RTK Receiver


We've been looking into new multi-frequency GNSS receiver chips coming onto the market, and we're very much excited about new capabilities that might be possible to put into our next generation Alpha-Extreme multi-frequency RTK receiver that we hope to make available for this year's Christmas.

Below are receiver features we are considering. You're very much welcome to let us know if there is something additional that we should consider.

L1 / L2 / L5 Triple Frequency Receiver

Advantage of dual-frequency over single-frequency receiver are:
1. Ionospheric error can be greatly reduced by using satellite measurements on two different frequencies, extending RTK operating range over 60Km.
2. RTK ambiguity resolution is much faster, in seconds, using wide-laning technique with dual frequency receiver.
3. Logged raw measurement data, after RINEX conversion, can use online PPP service to get centimeter level accuracy result anywhere in the world, without needing additional RTK base data.

Advantage of triple-frequency over dual-frequency receiver are:
1. Improved position accuracy under multipath environment due to using 10MHz signal on the L5 frequency.
2. Improved RTK ambiguity fix rate under more difficult foliage and multipath environments.   

Galileo will later have free of charge E6 High Accuracy Service (HAS) offering real-time better than 20 centimeter accuracy worldwide, using Precise Point Positioning (PPP) technology, without need of any RTK base station connection. 

The Japan QZSS L6 LEX signal similarly offers free of charge real-time Centimeter Level Augmentation Service (CLAS) using PPP technology, but it is regional to Japan only. 

The Galileo E6 is a total game changer for lane-level high precision positioning applications.

Would those products get a better fix than your current alpha in places like very urbanised area or very desified canopy forest ?

Going from two satellite constellation to four satellite constellation, also dual-frequency using two signals from the same satellite, increases usable signal from Alpha RTK's 11 ~ 18 to 32 ~ 50; it'll much improve RTK availability in urban area and under foliage.
